How does ESD flooring work?

ESD flooring is a critical part of creating a safe area for both ESD and ATEX operations. It prevents the buildup of static electricity on people, objects, and electronic equipment by providing a safe path for static charge to dissipate to the ground. Static electricity naturally accumulates through surface and atmospheric friction. Its sudden discharge can damage sensitive electronics, cause shocks or ignite flammable materials, liquids, and explosives.

That’s why electrostatic dissipate flooring is essential in environments where static build-up could cause damage. These include electronics manufacturing and assembly, laboratories and medical facilities, data centers, server rooms, packaging, aviation, and explosive manufacturing.

Ecotile ESD floor tiles – a hassle free solution

Our ESD floor tiles are quick to install and provide a robust grounded flooring system to safely dissipate static build-up. Each PVC interlocking floor tile contains a controlled amount of stainless-steel microfibres. These act like conductive veins to provide a path for static electricity to travel through the floor surface and dissipate safely to ground. This ensures that both people and equipment within the EPA (electrostatically protected area) are kept at the same potential voltage.

To ground the floor, a tile with a metal stud is installed every 60m2 and connected to an earthing point (usually via a standard 3-pin bonding plug). This allows static to complete its circuit and flow safely to ground. To unify conductivity, our ESD modular floor tiles are installed over a grid of conductive tape laid on the subfloor.

Thanks to this process, our ESD tiles never wear down or lose their static dissipative properties over time. You won’t need to worry about static damage from the moment our solution is installed.

ESD floor testing & certification

It is critical that your floor meets industry specific standards. It is also vital that it falls within the agreed electrical resistance range after it has been installed. Our interlocking ESD tiles have been independently tested against EN 14041:2018, the European Standard for Essential Characteristics of Resilient, Textile, Laminate and Modular Multilayer Floor Coverings. This verifies their performance and ensures that our tiles meet critical health, safety and environmental criteria.
