Bakers Self-Adhesive Labels was founded in 1973 by Roy and Marian Baker from a factory in Kings Cross. Every inch of space in the factory was needed for production so they set up their office in a caravan. By 1979 they had grown sufficiently to require larger premises and moved to their first factory in Walthamstow followed by a move to their second Walthamstow facility in 1987.
The Baker philosophy is one of flexibility, innovation, integrity and investment in their staff and the latest technology. These values have driven the company’s success and in 2011 they moved again to a purpose built unit in Brentwood bringing many of their staff from Walthamstow with them.
The floor in the new unit was polished concrete and MD Steve Baker was concerned that the heavy duty forklift trucks they used would damage the floor over time and cause disruptive maintenance issues further down the line. However, production was up and running and it simply wasn’t an option to shut down for a week to lay a new floor.
“Ecotile ticked all the boxes for us” explains Steve. “They were able to lay the floor while we continued working, the tiles provide excellent protection for our concrete floor and if a tile gets damaged we can replace it quickly. We also liked the fact they’re UK manufacturers”. Steve Baker – Managing Director of Bakers Labels
La solution
Starting in October 2014 we have laid over 2000m2 of Ecotile interlocking floor tiles throughout the production and warehouse areas. This includes the neighbouring unit that Bakers acquired in 2018 and the refurbishment of their central unit in 2019, to accommodate their BakPac facility for production of flexible packaging.
“It’s been a privilege to work with Bakers for the last 6 years and be a part of their success. We’re looking forward to continuing the relationship in the future, it’s a pleasure to work with a company that shares our ethos”. James Gedye – CEO of Ecotile Flooring Ltd
